Broken gold jewellery

Can I Sell Broken Gold Jewellery in New Zealand?

Yes, you can sell broken gold jewellery in New Zealand - and it is worth exactly the same per gram as undamaged gold. When you sell for scrap, the buyer pays for the pure gold content, not the condition of the piece. A broken 9ct chain and an identical unbroken chain contain exactly the same amount of gold.

Does the condition of gold jewellery affect its value?

No. Scratches, dents, snapped links, bent settings, and missing stones do not reduce the gold content. A buyer paying for scrap gold is paying for the metal, not the jewellery. Condition is irrelevant.

The only time condition matters is if a piece has collectible or antique value above its metal content - in which case selling as a piece rather than scrap might get you more. We will always tell you if we think that applies.

What broken gold items can I sell in NZ?

Broken or snapped chains and bracelets - a chain that costs more to repair than it is worth as jewellery still contains the same gold it always did.

Single earrings - lost the pair? The remaining one is still worth its weight.

Bent, crushed, or cut rings - rings that have been cut off fingers or badly resized still contain the full gold content.

Rings or pendants with missing stones - the gold setting has value even without the gemstone.

Tangled chains - we do not need them untangled.

Dental gold - crowns, bridges, and dental scrap contain real gold and are absolutely worth selling.

How much will I get for broken gold jewellery in NZ?

Value is determined by weight, carat, and the current gold spot price. A broken 9ct earring weighing 2 grams contains 0.75 grams of pure gold. A snapped 18ct chain weighing 15 grams contains 11.25 grams of pure gold. Multiply the pure gold weight by the current NZD spot price per gram to get the theoretical value - buyers pay a percentage of this to cover refining.

Small pieces add up fast, especially when you have several. Most people are surprised by the total once everything is weighed together.

Can I sell broken silver jewellery too?

Yes. The same principle applies to silver. A bent sterling silver bangle, a tarnished single cufflink, or a damaged brooch all contain the same silver content as when they were new. Look for a 925 stamp to confirm it is sterling silver rather than silver plated.
