Can I Sell My Gold or Silver Watch in Tauranga?

Yes, you can sell a gold or silver watch in Tauranga. Gold and silver watches have precious metal value regardless of whether they work. We buy gold-cased, gold-filled, and solid silver watches across the Bay of Plenty, paying based on the live spot price for the metal content.

Is my old watch worth anything in NZ?

It depends on what it is made of. Solid gold or silver watches have precious metal value. Gold-plated or base metal watches have little or no metal value, though some vintage or branded watches have collector value independent of the metal.

The easiest way to find out is a free assessment - we test the metal content and can quickly tell you whether your watch has metal value, collector value, or both.

How do I know if my watch is solid gold or gold plated?

Look for a hallmark on the case back or inside the case. Solid gold watches are typically stamped 375 (9ct), 585 (14ct), or 750 (18ct). Gold-filled watches may be stamped GF or 1/20 followed by a carat. Gold-plated watches are often stamped GP or have no precious metal marking.

If you cannot find a stamp or are unsure, we test it at no charge.

Does a watch need to be working to have value?

No. If the case or band is solid gold or silver, the watch has metal value regardless of whether the movement works. A non-working gold watch is worth exactly the same in precious metal terms as an identical working one.

Some non-working vintage watches also have collector or parts value. We will flag this if we think it applies.

What about silver watches or silver watch chains?

Solid silver watches and silver pocket watch chains are worth selling if they are sterling (925) or coin silver. Older pocket watches often have solid silver cases and chains that contain meaningful amounts of silver by weight.

Check for a 925 stamp or a lion passant mark on the case. Silver watch chains in particular can be heavier than they look and are worth weighing.
