Gold and silver coins are worth at least their precious metal content - calculated by weight multiplied by purity. Some coins are also worth more as collectibles. In Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty, we buy gold and silver coins of any quantity, any condition, at prices based on the live spot price.
How do I calculate what my gold coins are worth?
Gold coins are valued by weight and purity. A 1 troy ounce gold bullion coin (such as a Krugerrand or Britannia) contains 31.1 grams of pure gold - multiply by the current gold spot price per gram in NZD to get the theoretical value. Buyers pay a percentage of this to cover costs.
For older or mixed coins, the purity varies. We test and weigh each coin to determine its exact gold content, so you do not need to know the specifications upfront.
How do I calculate what my silver coins are worth?
Older New Zealand and Commonwealth silver coins (pre-1947 NZ coins, pre-1920 British coins) typically contain 50% to 92.5% silver depending on the year and country. A standard pre-decimal NZ florin weighs around 11 grams and contains roughly 5.5 grams of pure silver.
Modern silver bullion coins such as the Silver Maple Leaf or Silver Britannia are 99.9% pure silver and valued accordingly. We test all coins at no charge.
Are some coins worth more than their silver or gold content?
Yes. Rare, old, or low-mintage coins can be worth considerably more to a collector than their metal value. If you have coins that look old, unusual, or limited edition, it is worth getting them assessed before assuming they are scrap.
We will always let you know if we think a coin has collectible value above its metal content - a good buyer does not simply melt something that is worth more intact.
What types of coins do you buy in Tauranga?
